Darrell Ives

All of us here at the Edwards Foundation are grieved and saddened by the loss of our brother Darrell Ives. Darrell suffered a heart attack while on tour with the Pink Floyd band in Hong Kong. A memorial service will be held in his home town in Michigan.

Hi Delphia, Thank you for sending the email twice, I only received the second one. Though I only knew Darrell through Depeche Mode, he is still quite meaningful to me. He knew we (my daughter and our 2 friends) were there for the concert and nothing more. If he saw one of us in "trouble" (being pushed out of our precious front row seats LOL) he would make sure no one messed with us! I remember seeing him at breakfast with his wife and children in LA in 2001 for DM's Exciter Tour, he went out of his way to say "HI" and let them know we were fans in good standing LOL. We appreciated Darrell for his examples of living and working a caring and decent life, in fact the four of us just spent a long weekend together (we're from all over the US: San Fran, Michigan, DC, and FL ... of course they came to FL LOL) and of course our DM conversations included the wonderful things Darrell did to make our concert experiences safe and memorable as well as what we knew he did for others. The sweetest thing I'll remember Darrell for is when I asked him after the show in Denver if he could have DM sign a birthday card for my daughter ... he found me the next night in SLC during the show and handed me the card SIGNED!!! How many heads of security would take the time?? I gave it to my daughter right then, she was a few people away from me, she was thrilled!! When she found out how I had it signed, it was so much more special, she only wondered why Darrell didn't sign it too LOL!! Yes, he was good, he was decent, he was caring and concerned ... and unlike some security, he was not impressed with the surface offerings of a person ... I am 55 and he was as kind and considerate to me as to anyone. But you know all this, don't you? You've worked with him and know his heart. Thank you Delphia for writing me, I am still in disbelief but it's taking shape. Thank you so much, Mary
PS If you have the time, please send info for flowers, we would love to show his family he was loved by us.

I worked with Darrell recently as Roger's driver on the Sydney leg of the 2007 Dark side of the moon tour.
He was such a lovely guy and we got along really well. I was shocked to hear of his passing and will miss him much even though I knew him briefly, I feel blessed to have spent a bit of time with the ol' boy. He was a cool cat. I too would like some info to send my thoughts and wishes to his loved ones. I will miss you my friend.

I also got to know Darrell through his association with Depeche Mode. I was one of the online auction winners who got to experience a once in a lifetime backstage experience, made possible by Darrell. Darrell was so warm and caring, after 5 minutes of meeting him, you wished he were your best friend, LOL! Darrell went out of his way to make sure we were all having a great time and treated us like real VIP's the entire evening. I had a chance to run across Darrell a number of times after that, at Depeche Mode shows in the US and Europe and he always made a point to come over and say "hi", to make sure all was well, even give out a few extra tickets and backstage passes. One of the things I will remember most about Darrell was how passionate he was about The Edwards Foundation. You could tell how proud he was to be a part of it and showed us photos of one of his trips to Africa. Darrell had a wonderful heart and I will always remember his kindness.

It is with deep sorrow that Mr Darrell Ives, Head of Security for Roger Waters, died of a heart attack. He had been in great spirits in the last few weeks and, enjoying the tour and in particular, keeping himself in good physical shape, going to the gym every day and on some days, twice a day. In fact, he'd lost 10lbs since the start of the tour by going to the gym and watching what he was eating. He would sometimes have the occasional beer with the band, but that was all, so it's come as a complete shock with no warning .
A true gentleman who shall be missed greatly by all in the industry god rest his soul.

In my case, I *didn't* know Darrell Ives, and only heard about him and his death via a MySpace bulletin from the Depeche Mode MySpace account. Once I started digging into his work with the Edwards Foundation, however, I was very impressed. It just takes one person to inspire a ton of others.

I really appreciate all those who have sent me notes regarding Darrell's death. Yes. He and I were close friends. He travelled so much because of his profession. He was a good friend to me. I will never forget him. He was very inspiring to me... I never thought I would ever meet Depeche Mode... Thanks to Darrell Ives... I did. When I first met Darrell in NY... I was pissed off. He was blocking my view of Dave Gahan at the Bowery Ballroom (Oct. 28, 2005). I said "Damn, I wish I were taller!!!" LOL

Darrell turned to me and smiled at me. He then stepped to the side so I could see Dave Gahan upclose. OMG! I was in heaven! After the show, Darrell invited me to the after party. He said he thought I was beautiful. I was flattered. I asked him if my friends could come to the party too. He said yes. Needless to say, I met everybody (except for Dave Gahan) and had such a good time with my friends. Thank you Darrell for making my wish come true...

Darrell,

I can't believe that you have gone. I remember our final meeting in Istanbul in July
2006 as if it was yesterday, your frustration about the Italian girls being
late and our much too short backstage tour. You tried soooo hard to give us the
best possible, but there was no room on the stage for Roger and me to stay and
we only had about 5 minutes with Depeche Mode. But you kept your promise made the evening before to get me my black DM embroidered leather jacket
signed by the band 15 minutes before they were due on stage and I will wear it with pride ,thinking of you every time I
do. Despite the unfavourable circumstances, you gave me one of the best 3 days of my life and the text you
sent me the next day saying that there will be more gigs soon and you keep my
package open indefinately made my day and gave me believe in mankind again. You
wanted us to have a special time for the large donation to your favourite
charity. I will carry on supporting the children in Africa via the Edwards
Foundation like your daughter, who you told us so much about, and who had the idea of
auctioning off DM goodies.

God is not fair - why does he always want the best for his angels??? I have rarely met such a kind and selfless person as you are, who had so much
more to give - why did you not get the chance to do this?? Life is NOT FAIR!!!

I will never forget you.

Darrell was my next door neighbor in Lake Orion. He was the coolest, most humble guy you would ever meet. He would spent a whole Saturday smoking meats so he could invite his neighbors over. We shared many smoked meals with Darrell. All along, I had no idea this guy was "famous". My children loved Darrell, he was the "cool bald guy". My 17 year old considered Darrell his personal hero because they would talk "football". My husband spent many simple nights drinking and watching the games over at Darrell's place. We are sad, and very happy that we got to meet and spend time with someone as wonderful as Darrell. I know he is in Heaven smoking meet and playing the blues. Thanks Darrell!

Darrell was such a great person! It is with great saddness that I post this message as my mind is filled with such wonderful memories of our travels to Africa as a group. Darrell was such an integral part of the Edwards Foundation and all of it efforts. Below is a link to the article written about Darrell and the life he led which was featured in The Romeo Observer.

My wife and I were part of the auction / Depeche Mode European Tour. We had the great pleasure and honor of meeting Darrell in Dublin and connected with his passion for the Foundation. Due to his influence - he deeply affected us and we are strong believers in the Foundation and I dedicated a web site to help the Foundation.

Darrell was an incredible person with life, passion and love in his heart. He has touched so many people and will never be forgotten.

Deepest sympathies to Darrell's friends and family!

James and Debra Dimas
